Silence Breaks

A compact poem about silence, voice, history, and the liberating force of another person's story.

An atmospheric illustration for Silence Breaks

Silence. That muted cacophony that frightens me. Inside, the noises I hear in the quiet- shhhhhh… hush… hush… a sigh- a breath- a name, half-spoken- rushing, gushing, breathless hums and whispering drums. They haunt me until your voice shatters them, breaks me free.

It was history that tore the shackles of voicelessness, your story of who you could have been.

You unraveled a tale of roots breathing, tangled beneath the earth. digging deep, round and round, threading through the unmapped curves of silent rocks. Your story, glistening in the vast emptiness of a wayward night.

Daring, unbent, unhinged. Wrapped like a treasure for the world, with tearful joy.
